Closing down sale! Toyota offers $US40,000 discount on hydrogen powered vehicles
Car dealers in California are offering a clear-out discount on Toyota's hydrogen powered Mirai, reducing the price by $40,000. However, the challenge is finding hydrogen fueling stations in the state.
Deal on Toyota's Hydrogen Powered Mirai
Car dealers in California are currently offering a significant discount on Toyota's hydrogen powered Mirai. The normal retail price of $US52,000 has been reduced by $40,000, making it available for around $US12,000. This presents a great opportunity for those interested in hydrogen powered vehicles.
However, one major challenge remains - the availability of hydrogen fueling stations. Last month, Shell Hydrogen announced the closure of all its seven hydrogen stations in California due to supply complications and external market factors. With only 55 hydrogen stations in the state, this closure accounts for 12% of the total stations.
Hydrogen's Expensive Nature
Apart from the difficulties in the hydrogen supply chain and the vehicle itself, hydrogen is significantly more expensive compared to electricity. This is due to inherent inefficiencies in its production process.
According to a report by Hydrogen Insight, driving a Toyota hydrogen car is nearly 14 times more expensive in California than driving a Tesla Model 3. True Zero, California's largest H2 fuel retailer, recently increased the price of hydrogen to $36/kg, resulting in a cost of around $201.60 to fill a Toyota Mirai's 5.6kg tank. In comparison, fully charging a Tesla Model 3 in California would cost $11.94.
Challenges for Hydrogen Powered Vehicles
The commercialization of hydrogen powered vehicles has always been hindered by the laws of thermodynamics. These vehicles face fundamental challenges that make them less viable than electric vehicles.
Despite these challenges, companies like Toyota have continued to invest in hydrogen powered vehicles. However, the future of hydrogen as a primary fuel source for vehicles remains uncertain.
