"Critical failure" closes I-195 west on Washington Bridge in Providence, Rhode Island
Massachusetts drivers traveling towards Rhode Island are being warned to anticipate delays due to the closure of the westbound lanes of I-195 on the Washington Bridge in Providence. It could take months until the bridge is reopened.
Bridge Closure Due to Critical Failure
The westbound lanes of I-195 on the Washington Bridge in Providence, Rhode Island have been closed due to a critical failure of some bridge components. According to RIDOT (Rhode Island Department of Transportation), the areas that require repairs are part of the original bridge that was constructed in 1968.
As a result of this closure, Massachusetts drivers traveling towards Rhode Island are being advised to expect delays. All westbound traffic on I-195 is being diverted to alternate routes. RIDOT Director Peter Alviti stated that the westbound side will remain closed until repairs can be made to ensure complete safety.
Estimated Duration of Repairs
RIDOT anticipates that it will take approximately two to three weeks to relocate westbound traffic to two lanes on the eastbound side of the bridge so that repairs can commence. The duration of the repairs will depend on the severity of the issues, but it is expected that it could take three months or longer to complete the necessary fixes.
During this period, drivers entering Rhode Island from Massachusetts on various highways, including I-195, I-95, 1, 6, 44, 152, and 114A, should be prepared for delays. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has urged drivers to plan their routes accordingly.
Detour Routes Provided by RIDOT
RIDOT has provided detour routes to mitigate the impact of the bridge closure on local traffic. In East Providence, drivers are advised to take Exit 2 to Broadway and follow the detour signs to the Henderson Bridge. They can then rejoin I-195 West at Gano Street.
For drivers coming from Southeast Massachusetts west of Fall River, the recommended route is to take Massachusetts Exit 1 and follow Route 114A. From there, they can proceed onto Route 114 (Pawtucket Avenue) or Route 1A (Newport Avenue) to reach I-95. This route has been designated as the preferred option for trucks. Alternatively, drivers coming from Southeast Massachusetts east of Fall River, including those coming from Cape Cod and the New Bedford Area, should take Massachusetts Exit 14B to Route 24 North. They can then follow the route to I-495 North, which leads to I-95.
These detour routes aim to alleviate the traffic congestion caused by the closure and facilitate smoother travel for motorists.
