Prabal Gurung's Poetic Collection

Prabal Gurung, a Singapore-born designer, presented a Fall Winter 2024 collection that was deeply inspired by personal loss. Gurung's relationship with his father was strained, and his father's passing compelled him to reflect on his own journey and find comfort in his diaries and old family photos. From this deep introspection, Gurung crafted a collection that embraced comfort and beauty.

The collection featured cashmere wraps and shearling coats that enveloped the body, as well as hand-sewn gowns that showcased a sense of subtle deconstruction. Gurung explained that instead of using beads, he opted for hand-cut bias strips of chiffon and organza that created an unraveling effect. This unexpected approach added a unique touch to his designs and created a beautiful movement in the garments.

Jason Wu's Exploration of Construction

Jason Wu's Fall Winter 2024 collection also embraced the theme of deconstruction, but with a focus on the beauty of construction. Inspired by the work of designers Charles James and Geoffrey Beene, Wu showcased structured ballgowns and sleek dresses with Fortuny pleats. The collection paid homage to these fashion pioneers while adding a modern sensibility to the designs.

Celebrities like Diane Kruger, Misty Copeland, and Louisa Jacobson were present in the front row, praising Wu's craftsmanship and attention to detail. His designs were described as timeless, wearable, and beautiful. Wu aimed to create unexpected moments with his collection, and his hand-sewn gowns are poised to make a statement on upcoming red carpets.

Italian Brands Make a Splash in New York

While American designers showcased their collections, two prominent Italian brands made their presence known in New York. Prada Beauty launched its Skin and Color Collection at a star-studded party in Williamsburg. Sofia Richie Grainge, Maude and Iris Apatow, and Emily Ratajkowski were among the attendees who celebrated the U.S. launch of Prada's beauty line.

Gucci also had a notable event, combining the U.S. arrival of creative director Sebasto De Sarno's first collection for the brand with the unveiling of their refurbished Wooster Street boutique. A-list celebrities like Jessica Chastain, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Elliot Page attended the event, showcasing their support for Gucci's new direction.
