Retired Quarterback Unable to Use Right Arm for Throwing

Drew Brees, the former NFL quarterback who retired after the 2020 season, has revealed that his right arm 'does not work.' Now 44 years old and a potential future hall of famer, Brees said in a recent interview that he can only throw using his left hand.

During the interview on ESPN Radio, Brees was asked when the last time an NFL team approached him to play. He jokingly responded, 'It was probably the year after I retired, so 2021. There might have been a feeler or two that was put out there after that.'

Brees then shared the surprising revelation, saying, 'But look, I’ll let you in on a little fact: I don’t throw with my right arm anymore. My right arm does not work. So when I throw in the backyard right now, I throw left-handed. I can play pickleball just because it’s below the waist, but anything above my shoulders I’ve got a hard time with.'

The Result of a Previous Shoulder Injury

Brees attributes his inability to use his right arm to a dislocated right shoulder he suffered while playing for the San Diego Chargers at the start of his NFL career in 2001. In 2005, after the injury, he questioned if he would ever be able to play again.

He further explained, 'That kind of put me on the fast-track to a degenerative shoulder and all kinds of arthritic changes.' This injury and its lasting effects prevented Brees from joining the Miami Dolphins in 2006, as he was advised against it due to his shoulder condition.

Instead, Brees signed with the New Orleans Saints, where he spent the remaining 15 seasons of his career and achieved great success, including winning the Super Bowl in the 2009 season.

Brees' Stellar Career despite the Right Arm Issue

Despite his right arm limitations, Brees left an incredible legacy in the NFL. He is currently second only to Tom Brady in career passing yards and passing touchdowns, showcasing his exceptional skills even with his physical limitations.

Brees concluded the interview by expressing his desire to continue playing if his right arm still allowed it, stating, 'I don’t throw with my right arm anymore. If I could, I would absolutely still be playing.' His passion for the game and his impressive accomplishments will undoubtedly secure his place among the football greats.
