Fitzgerald Signs Multiyear Contract with Devils, Promoted to President/GM
Tom Fitzgerald has signed a multiyear contract with the New Jersey Devils and has been promoted to the position of president of hockey operations/general manager. He has led the team to the playoffs and has built a strong core roster.
Fitzgerald's Success with the Devils
Since being named full-time GM and executive vice president for the New Jersey Devils on July 9, 2020, Tom Fitzgerald has achieved a record of 122-116-27. Under his leadership, the team made it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season and reached the Eastern Conference Second Round. This marked a significant milestone for the Devils as they had the most wins (52) and points (112) in a single season in team history.
"I've grown a lot," Fitzgerald said. "I've got a lot more areas to grow, but I'm always preaching a growth mindset." Fitzgerald attributes his success to his willingness to learn and surround himself with individuals who share the same desire to improve. He also emphasizes the importance of resources and support from ownership in making informed decisions that benefit the team both in the short and long term.
Current Season and Future Goals
In the current season, the Devils have a record of 24-18-3 and are tied for fourth place in the Metropolitan Division with the New York Islanders. They have 51 points and one game in hand. The team is determined to secure a playoff spot and is four points behind the Carolina Hurricanes for third place in the division, as well as two points away from a wild-card position.
Fitzgerald expressed his gratitude to managing partner David Blitzer and co-managing partner Josh Harris for their continued support and commitment. He acknowledges that there is still work to be done in order to establish the Devils as consistent contenders and take the franchise to new heights. Fitzgerald is enthusiastic about the challenges that lie ahead and is determined to bring the Stanley Cup back to New Jersey for the fans.
Fitzgerald's Impact on the Team
Tom Fitzgerald joined the Devils as assistant general manager on July 24, 2015, and assumed the role of interim GM on Jan. 12, 2020, following the dismissal of former GM Ray Shero. Since then, Fitzgerald has been instrumental in shaping the team's core roster. He has drafted, signed, or acquired key players such as Timo Meier, Ondrej Palat, Tyler Toffoli, and Erik Haula.
Fitzgerald played a significant role in the drafting of top prospects Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, Michael McLeod, and Jesper Bratt. He has also secured long-term contracts for Jack Hughes, Hischier, and Bratt, demonstrating his commitment to building a strong foundation for the team. Prior to his tenure with the Devils, Fitzgerald served as assistant GM for the Pittsburgh Penguins for six years and was their director of player development from 2007-2009.
