From Small Town Roots to the NHL

Yanni Gourde grew up in the small town of Saint-Narcisse-de-Beaurivage, Quebec, where he spent most of his time on the town's outdoor rink. Playing with his brothers and maintaining the ice at night, Gourde developed a deep love for the game and honed his skills.

His time on the outdoor rink prepared him for the challenges of playing in the minors and eventually making it to the NHL. Gourde, who stands at just 5-foot-9, defied the odds and went on to win the Stanley Cup twice as an undrafted forward.

Now, after years of hard work and dedication, Gourde will finally have the opportunity to play in an NHL outdoor game. The Seattle Kraken will face off against the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2024 Discover NHL Winter Classic, and Gourde couldn't be more thrilled.

Building the Foundation of His Game

Gourde attributes the foundation of his game to the countless hours he spent on the outdoor rink in Saint-Narcisse-de-Beaurivage. Going against his older brother, who was a more skilled player, Gourde developed a competitive drive that fueled his passion for hockey.

While Gourde initially played for the love of the game, it wasn't until after his standout season in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League that he began seriously considering a career in professional hockey. His successful junior career led to a shot in the AHL, where he had to prove himself against bigger and more experienced players.

Over the next few years, Gourde played for various teams in the AHL and ECHL, continuously working to improve his skills and make his mark. He finally got his opportunity with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2017-18 and quickly became a key player for the team, contributing to their Stanley Cup victories in 2020 and 2021.

A Special Moment for a Seattle Original

As an original member of the Seattle Kraken and an alternate captain, Gourde has been a witness to the team's growth and success. From their inaugural season to their first playoff appearance, Gourde has seen the support of the fans grow and has been inspired by their passion.

Now, he will have the opportunity to play in front of thousands of fans at T-Mobile Park, the home of the Seattle Mariners. This Winter Classic game is a special moment for Gourde, who is proud to represent Seattle and be part of the team's journey.

For Gourde, playing in the Winter Classic is not only a chance to fulfill a dream but also a reminder of his roots and where it all began. It's a tribute to the small-town outdoor rink that shaped him into the player he is today.
