Leading grocery delivery company Instacart has partnered with retailers nationwide to introduce their new smart shopping carts, equipped with AI technology. These carts allow shoppers to scan items directly in the cart, weigh produce, and keep a real-time track of the total cost of their purchases. Moreover, customers can use their loyalty accounts on the carts to access promotions and savings while they shop.

David McIntosh, Instacart's VP and General Manager of Connected Stores, explained that the majority of shoppers have a budget to stick to. He noted that nobody wants to reach the checkout lane and realize they have to put items back because they exceeded their budget. By offering features like real-time tracking of the cart's total cost, Instacart is aiming to provide a more convenient and stress-free shopping experience for customers.

The smart shopping carts utilized by Instacart are powered by Caper AI, which was acquired by Instacart in 2021 for $350 million. These carts employ AI technology to enhance recognition, scanning, and weighing of items. Albertsons has partnered with Veeve to deploy smart carts in select stores, reducing the time spent in-store by 24 minutes. Smart-cart clip-on attachments are being deployed by Shopic and Shufersal supermarket chains in Israel, as well as Wegmans in Rochester, New York.
