Inside the Mars simulations preparing humans for life on the red planet
NASA is seeking potential volunteers for a simulated mission to Mars called CHAPEA. The mission aims to understand how a crew reacts to the challenges of living and working on Mars.
NASA's Call for Applicants
NASA is currently accepting applications for its second planned CHAPEA mission, which will begin in 2025. The mission will involve a volunteer crew of four people living and working inside Mars Dune Alpha, a 3D-printed habitat designed to resemble conditions on Mars.
During the one-year mission, participants will carry out various tasks, including growing crops, maintaining the habitat, exercising, and conducting robotic operations. They will also face real challenges such as equipment failure, communication delays, and dealing with limited resources.
Eligibility and Selection Process
To be eligible for the CHAPEA program, applicants must be nonsmoking, healthy US citizens between the ages of 30 and 55. They should have a strong desire for unique adventures and an interest in contributing to NASA's work for Mars exploration.
Applicants should have a master's degree in a STEM field or a related requirement like a medical degree. They should also have two years of professional experience or 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time on a jet aircraft. The selection process may take up to 13 months and includes medical and psychological tests.
It's important to note that certain food allergies or medications may disqualify applicants. Compensation details will be provided to selected candidates during the screening process.
Lessons from the Current Mission
The ongoing first CHAPEA mission, which started in 2023, aims to monitor and assess the health and performance of the crew living in a confined space similar to Mars conditions. The crew has been able to grow crops, go on simulated Marswalks, and conduct experiments.
The data and lessons learned from this mission will guide NASA in ensuring the health and well-being of future Martian crews. Three CHAPEA missions in total are planned, each with similar goals of gathering data and improving mission readiness.
