John Oliver's surprise at Jon Stewart's return
John Oliver, host of Last Week Tonight, was surprised to hear that Jon Stewart will be returning as host of The Daily Show. During an episode of NBC's Today show, Oliver expressed his surprise and commented on Stewart's talent as a host.
Oliver mentioned that The Daily Show needs a host and that Stewart is a very good one. He also expressed his excitement to see what Stewart will do in his return.
Stewart hosted The Daily Show from 1996 to 2015 and will be returning as the regular Monday night host for the entire duration of the 2024 US Presidential election cycle. The rest of the week will be hosted by Daily Show correspondents.
Possible replacements for Stewart
After 2025, Oliver suggested that a permanent host should be appointed for The Daily Show. He mentioned correspondents Roy Wood Jr and Amber Ruffin as suitable replacements.
Oliver also highlighted the excitement of seeing Jon Stewart back on the show during an election year. He referred to Stewart as the voice of their generation.
Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, expressed his enthusiasm for Stewart's return and described him as the perfect person to provide clarity and wit during a time of division in the country.
John Oliver's journey with The Daily Show
John Oliver joined The Daily Show in 2006 as the senior British correspondent and won three Emmy awards for his writing. He took over as the host for two months in 2013 when Stewart was on leave.
At the end of 2013, Oliver left The Daily Show to host his own HBO series, Last Week Tonight, which is currently in its 11th season.
Jon Stewart's departure from The Daily Show in 2015 led to Trevor Noah taking over as the host. Noah left the show in 2022 and now Jon Stewart is set to return.
