Shortlisted for the Booker prize

Being shortlisted for the Booker prize was an incredible experience for me. It allowed me to connect with readers outside of the US and receive recognition from people all over the world. Watching Marlon James win with 'A Brief History of Seven Killings' in 2015 was a defining moment for me, as it brought attention to the history and struggles of Jamaica. I hope that my book can also shed light on the African-Caribbean diaspora and challenge people's perceptions of the Caribbean.

On the night of the ceremony, the suspense was intense. As a nominee, I had no idea who would be announced as the winner until the name was called. It was a rollercoaster of emotions, but ultimately, I am grateful for the opportunity to be recognized and to have my work acknowledged.

Challenging stereotypes of the Caribbean

In 'If I Survive You', I wanted to highlight the complexities and diversity of the Caribbean, beyond the typical tourist view. Jamaica, in particular, has a rich history and its own set of challenges that often go unnoticed or simplified by outsiders.

By addressing the impact of US involvement in political tensions, crime, and the drug trade, I hope to broaden readers' understanding of the Caribbean and its people. It's important to see beyond the stereotypes and recognize the dreams, lives, and concerns of individuals from these countries.

The writing process and future projects

Writing 'If I Survive You' was a unique experience for me, as I initially approached it as a novel but ended up writing it in the form of interconnected stories. This structure allowed me to explore different perspectives and narratives, giving voice to multiple characters within the story.

Moving forward, I am currently working on a new novel set in Miami Beach. Unlike my previous book, this one will follow a more traditional novel structure. I am excited to delve into this new project and continue my exploration of storytelling and character development.
