Lionel Messi: Chinese Fans Angry as Superstar Plays in Japan
Lionel Messi's decision to play in a Japan friendly after missing a match in Hong Kong has sparked anger among Chinese fans and led to conspiracy theories.
Chinese Fans Upset as Messi Plays in Japan
Lionel Messi's choice to participate in a friendly match in Japan, following his absence in a Hong Kong match, has left Chinese fans furious, giving rise to speculation about political motives.
The state media outlet Global Times accused Messi and his club Inter Miami of having "political motives" to "embarrass" Hong Kong. Although Messi cited injury as the reason for remaining on the bench throughout Sunday's match in Hong Kong, his appearance in a match in Tokyo just a few days later led some fans to question his injury claim.
During the Hong Kong match, which attracted 38,000 fans, there were boos and demands for refunds when co-owner of Inter Miami, David Beckham, addressed the crowd. Fans had paid up to HK$4,880 (£494; $624) for the chance to watch Messi play.
Messi's Relationship with China
Last year, Messi received a warm welcome in Beijing while playing for Argentina in a friendly against Australia. Around 68,000 fans paid up to $680 to witness his performance. Moreover, Messi is known as a spokesperson for prominent Chinese brands, including Huawei, Chery, Tencent, Mengniu, Chishui River Wine, and J&T Express.
Kevin Yeung, Hong Kong's secretary for culture, sports, and tourism, expressed disappointment, stating that government officials were given repeated assurances that Messi would play. However, just 10 minutes before the end of the match, they were informed of Messi's inability to play due to a hamstring adductor injury. Despite requesting alternatives, such as Messi appearing on the field to interact with fans and receive the trophy, these arrangements did not materialize.
The absence of Messi caused extreme disappointment among officials, with the territory's chief executive, John Lee, calling for an explanation from the match organizers. Hong Kong lawmaker Regina Ip also expressed anger, blaming Messi, Inter Miami, and an unidentified instigator for the deliberate snub.
Reactions and Controversy
Match organizer Tatler Asia stated that Messi had a contractual obligation to play unless injured. It announced the withdrawal of its application for a HK$16m government grant after the incident. The match had initially been designated as a major sporting event, making the organizers eligible for government funding.
Meanwhile, Messi expressed regret at the news conference in Japan, citing a swollen and painful groin injury as the cause for his inability to play in Hong Kong. His explanation on the Chinese social media platform Weibo has attracted over 142,000 comments. While some comments offered support, many reacted angrily, branding the Argentine as a "conman" and "garbage." Some accused him of prioritizing financial gain from Chinese fans while pandering to the Japanese.
The controversy surrounding Messi's absence from the Hong Kong match continues, with tensions rising between Chinese fans and the football superstar.
