Mickey Mouse horror movie trailer drops after character enters public domain
Watch the unhinged trailer for 'Mickey's Mouse Trap.'
New Horror Film Featuring Mickey Mouse
On January 1, the copyright for Disney's classic 1928 short Steamboat Willie expired, entering the public domain. To mark the occasion, a trailer for a new live-action Mickey Mouse horror film titled 'Mickey's Mouse Trap' was released.
The trailer showcases an unhinged version of Mickey Mouse, portrayed as a knife-wielding killer. The synopsis reveals that the plot revolves around Alex's 21st birthday celebration at an amusement arcade, where a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse plays a deadly game with her and her friends.
Directed by Jamie Bailey and written by Simon Phillips, who also plays the role of the murderous mouse, 'Mickey's Mouse Trap' features eerie clips from Steamboat Willie projected onto the screen. The trailer ends with a chilling message that sets the tone for the upcoming horrors.
Cast and Release Information
Starring Sophie McIntosh, Callum Sywyk, Allegra Nocita, Ben Harris, Damir Kovic, Mackenzie Mills, and Nick Biskupek, the movie does not have a confirmed release date yet. However, anticipation is high for this unique take on the beloved children's character.
Interestingly, 'Mickey's Mouse Trap' is not the only cultural work from 1928 to lose copyright protection after the 95-year term. Other characters such as Tigger from A. A. Milne's 'House at Pooh Corner' and Peter Pan from J. M. Barrie's 'Peter Pan' have also entered the public domain.
Horror Treatment for Children's Characters
Mickey Mouse is not the first children's character to be reimagined in a horror setting. Last year, Winnie-the-Pooh received the slasher treatment in 'Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey' after entering the public domain. A sequel to the film is set to be released later this year.
