Nebraska Priest Fatally Assaulted at Church; Suspect in Custody

A Catholic priest in Nebraska was killed after being assaulted at his church, with a suspect now in custody.

Assault at Church

Father Stephen Gutgsell, a priest at St. John the Baptist Church in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, was assaulted at the church's rectory.

The attack occurred on Sunday at 5:05 a.m. local time.

Deputies from the Washington County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene and apprehended a suspect inside the rectory.

Investigation Ongoing

Father Gutgsell was then transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The identity of the suspect and the cause of Gutgsell's death have not been released at this time.

Authorities have stated that there is no further threat to the public.
