Rasmus Dahlin, defenseman for the Buffalo Sabres, set a new record for the highest skating distance in a single game this season. In a 3-2 shootout win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday, Dahlin covered a distance of 4.91 miles.
This surpassed the previous record held by Kirill Kaprizov, forward for the Minnesota Wild, who skated 4.87 miles in a 4-3 overtime win against the Montreal Canadiens on Dec. 21. Prior to that, Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson held the record for best distance by a defenseman this season with 4.71 miles in a 4-3 shootout loss against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 13.
Dahlin's distance ranks among the top in NHL EDGE data
Dahlin's impressive distance of 4.91 miles places him sixth in the NHL EDGE data for the past three seasons. The top five spots are held by Connor McDavid (5.40 miles), Thomas Chabot (5.19 miles), Zach Werenski (5.16 miles), Cam Fowler (5.14 miles), and Erik Karlsson (4.93 miles).
In addition to his remarkable skating distance, Dahlin is also excelling in other areas. He currently ranks fourth in the NHL for average time on ice per game with 25 minutes and 40 seconds. Among defensemen, he is tied for ninth in points with 43 (14 goals, 29 assists) in 57 games. He is also tied for second in goals and second in shots on goal with 176.
