Oilers Move Within One Win of Tying NHL Record
Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl lead the Edmonton Oilers to their 16th straight win
Oilers on the Verge of NHL Record
The Edmonton Oilers won their 16th consecutive game, putting them just one win away from tying the NHL record. Led by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, the Oilers defeated the Nashville Predators 4-1. They will have a chance to tie the record set by the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins after the All-Star break when they play against the Vegas Golden Knights on February 6th. The Oilers already share the second-longest streak with the 2016-17 Columbus Blue Jackets.
Despite not playing their best hockey recently, the Oilers managed to find a way to secure three wins. McDavid acknowledged that there are areas they need to improve on despite their success. However, their winning streak is a testament to the team's performance and their ability to get the job done.
Edmonton's success can be attributed to their strong goaltending, solid defense, and impressive penalty kill. They have also set a franchise record by not allowing more than two goals in their last 14 games.
Scoring Breakdown
During the game against the Predators, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Zach Hyman, McDavid, and Draisaitl all contributed to the scoring. Nugent-Hopkins opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the first period, followed by Draisaitl's goal on the power play in the second period. McDavid added another goal in the third period by banking the puck off the goalie's backside from behind the goal line. Colton Sissons scored the only goal for the Predators, breaking the Oilers' shutout bid.
Draisaitl's goal also marked his 800th career point, making him the fourth-fastest player to reach this milestone in NHL history.
Corey Perry Makes His Debut
Corey Perry made his debut for the Edmonton Oilers after signing a one-year contract with the team. Perry previously had his contract terminated by the Chicago Blackhawks due to inappropriate behavior. Perry expressed his excitement about joining the Oilers and his desire to contribute to the team's success. He made an immediate impact by assisting on Draisaitl's power-play goal.
Zach Hyman capped off the scoring with an empty-net goal, bringing his season total to 30 goals.
