Panthers Owner Throws Drink at Fans
Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was caught on video during Sunday's 26-0 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars apparently throwing a drink in the direction of Jaguars fans from his open-air suite at EverBank Stadium.
The video was posted on social media Sunday.
The incident appeared to happen with about three minutes to play after an interception by quarterback Bryce Young, who was so frustrated after a sack early in the game that he threw a tablet on the sideline.
Reaction and Consequences
A Panthers spokesperson declined to comment. NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said the league is "aware of the video" and has "no further comment at this time."
The incident occurred during a game that ended Carolina's streak of 342 games without being shut out. It also solidified the Panthers' status as the team with the worst record in the league, giving the Chicago Bears (who own Carolina's pick) the top selection in the 2024 draft.
Carolina traded two first-round picks and top receiver DJ Moore to the Bears to select Bryce Young as the first overall pick in the draft. However, Young has had a disappointing season, ranking as one of the worst quarterbacks statistically in the NFL.
Troubled Times for the Panthers
David Tepper has fired three head coaches in-season since 2019, showcasing the turmoil within the organization. Despite paying $2.75 billion for the Panthers in 2018, Tepper has struggled to turn the team's fortunes around.
The incident with Tepper throwing a drink at fans only adds to the list of controversies surrounding the owner.
The Panthers' future looks uncertain as they continue to struggle on and off the field, with Young failing to live up to expectations and the team enduring another losing season.
