Quest 3 Surpasses HTC Vive in Usage on Steam
Quest 3, Meta's VR headset, has become the fourth most used VR headset on Steam, surpassing the original HTC Vive.
Quest 3's Usage Share on Steam Increases
According to the Steam Hardware & Software Survey, Quest 3's usage share on Steam grew significantly, jumping from 5.2% in November to 7.74% in December. This surpasses the original HTC Vive and puts Quest 3 on track to eventually overtake the Oculus Rift S for the third spot. Quest 2 remains the most used VR headset on Steam.
However, despite its popularity, Quest 2's share actually declined somewhat, despite its affordable price of $250 since mid-November. This could indicate that Quest 2 owners are upgrading to Quest 3, or that there is lower retention among Quest 2 owners compared to Quest 3.
Meta Headsets Dominate VR Headset Use on Steam
Meta's headsets, including Oculus Rift, Rift S, Oculus Quest, Quest 2, Quest Pro, and Quest 3, make up the majority of VR headset use on Steam, accounting for over 62% of usage. Valve's Index headset is Meta's closest competitor with just over 18% of usage.
There is currently no known serious competitor to Meta in the VR headset market, and if the rumored 'Quest 3 Lite' is released, Meta's lead may further increase. The overall percentage of Steam users using any VR headset saw a slight decrease, reflecting the stagnation of PC-based VR as the market shifts towards standalone headsets like the Quest.
