Nadal defeats Thiem in Brisbane

Rafael Nadal, one of tennis' biggest icons, returned to competitive singles action with a win at the Brisbane International in Australia. Nadal, who hadn't played an elite-level singles match since a hip injury in January last year, showcased impressive mobility and form as he defeated Dominic Thiem 7-5, 6-1. The 37-year-old lost only six points on his serve and dominated the latter part of the match, winning eight of the last nine games.

"The first set was equal, with both of us serving well and more or less winning on serve," said Nadal. "I was able to have that break at 6-5, so that makes the difference. Honestly, I know Dominic has gone through some hard times with injuries too, so I'm happy to see him on court and I wish him the very best for the season."

Nadal expressed his happiness and emotions after a long and challenging year. He recognized the support of his team and family during this period and thanked the fans for their support. This victory marked Nadal's 1069th tour-level win, putting him in fourth place on the all-time men's leaderboard, behind Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic. Nadal, currently ranked No. 672, will continue his comeback journey in the next round against Australian wild card Jason Kubler.

Nadal reflects on his comeback

Rafael Nadal described his return to professional tennis after a year as an emotional and important day for him. The tennis star had been away from the game for the longest period in his career due to various challenges. Nadal expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play in front of a supportive crowd and felt proud of his performance on the first day of his comeback journey.

"Today is honestly an emotional and important day for me after probably one of the toughest years of my tennis career, without a doubt," Nadal said. "I had the chance to come back after a year and play in front of an amazing crowd and play, I think, at a very positive level. On the first day, it is something that makes us feel proud. Myself, all the team and family that have been there every single day during the past year."

Nadal's win against Dominic Thiem was his first since last year's Australian Open. He acknowledged the challenges faced by Thiem, who has also dealt with injuries, and wished him the best for the upcoming season.

Nadal's next opponent

Rafael Nadal's next challenge in the Brisbane International will be facing Australian wild card entry Jason Kubler. Nadal, who is playing with a wild card himself and currently ranked No. 672, will be looking to build on his winning start and continue his momentum in the tournament.

Kubler, a 30-year-old Australian, had a match against Aslan Karatsev on Tuesday when the No. 8 seed retired due to a knee injury. The Australian was level with Karatsev at 6-4, 6-7(4) before the match was halted. Nadal will face Kubler in the next round and hopes to maintain his positive form and secure another victory.
