Redrafting each first-round pick from the 2023 NFL Draft

A look back at the 2023 NFL Draft and a redraft of the top half of the first round based on the current NFL season.

1. Carolina Panthers: QB C.J. Stroud

In the redraft, the Panthers take QB C.J. Stroud instead of Bryce Young. While Young has struggled, the Panthers' offensive issues go beyond the quarterback position. Stroud would be an interesting fit in their offense.

However, it's important to note that this redraft assumes all players are healthy, so it's purely a hypothetical exercise.

The Panthers' offense has struggled this season due to issues at offensive line, the run game, and receiver positions. Stroud may not be able to overcome these issues, but it would be intriguing to see him try.

2. Houston Texans: DT Jalen Carter

Instead of selecting C.J. Stroud, the Texans take DT Jalen Carter with their second overall pick. Carter has been dominant for the Eagles, and the Texans prioritize a quarterback with their next selection.

Carter was considered the best player in the draft class but fell due to off-field issues. In terms of on-field production, he has been the second-best player in the class so far.

This selection addresses a position of need for the Texans and adds a highly talented player to their defense.

3. Houston Texans: QB Anthony Richardson

With their third overall pick, the Texans select QB Anthony Richardson. Richardson showed promise in his limited playing time and could be a successful quarterback in the right system.

The Texans prioritize a functional offense around their quarterback in this redraft, and Richardson's potential fits that vision. It's important to consider current team needs and the desire to select the best player to help the team right now.

Although Richardson has played in just four games, he has had a more successful rookie season in this hypothetical scenario.

4. Indianapolis Colts: QB Bryce Young

The Colts redraft their original pick of QB Anthony Richardson and select QB Bryce Young instead. Young would benefit from being in a functional offense, unlike the 2023 Panthers.

First-year head coach Shane Steichen has shown the ability to help rookie quarterbacks acclimate to the NFL, as seen with Richardson. Young in a functional offense could showcase his potential.

The redraft takes into account the team's current needs and the aim to select the best player to help the team right now.
