Brian Griffin: Work and Other Stories

MMX Gallery in London is currently showcasing a selection of Brian Griffin's early work from the 1970s and 1980s. The exhibition includes prints from his notable books such as Moscow, Copyright, Power, and Work. Griffin's work is inspired by various art movements, including Renaissance, Symbolism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.

Having grown up and worked in the Industrial Midlands of England, Griffin's photography reflects his surroundings and incorporates real emotions and character. The exhibition at MMX Gallery features over thirty rarely seen prints, including vintage silver gelatin and silver bromide prints. Additionally, signed copies of Griffin's first self-published book, Copyright 1978, will be available for purchase.

The Achievements of Brian Griffin

Brian Griffin is renowned for his groundbreaking approach to portraiture. His subjects have ranged from iconic figures like Iggy Pop to Kate Bush. His notable projects include 'Work' in the 1980s and 'The Road to 2012,' commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery. The photograph 'A Broken Frame' from 'Work' was featured on the front cover of a special supplement titled 'The Greatest Photographs of the 80s' by The Life magazine.

Throughout his career, Griffin has published over twenty monographs and has had over fifty international solo exhibitions. His work is held in institutional collections such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

Legacy and Recognition

In 2009, Brian Griffin became the patron of FORMAT Festival and in 2013, he received the Centenary Medal from the Royal Photographic Society. This prestigious award recognized Griffin's lifetime achievement in photography.
