Rempe Set to Make NHL Debut in Stadium Series for Rangers
Forward Matt Rempe could make history as he becomes the first player to make his League debut in an outdoor game.
Rookie Forward Ready to Make History
Matt Rempe, a rookie forward for the New York Rangers, has the opportunity to make NHL history on Sunday. He could become the first player to make their League debut in an outdoor game, a feat that Rempe finds unreal and unbelievable. In preparation for the 2024 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series game against the New York Islanders, Rempe was recalled from the American Hockey League's Hartford on Friday to replace the injured Blake Wheeler on the Rangers roster.
Rempe, a sixth-round pick by the Rangers in the 2020 NHL Draft, practiced with the team on Friday and took rushes on the fourth line with Barclay Goodrow and Adam Edstrom at MetLife Stadium. He expresses confidence in his ability to handle the game well, given his hard, physical playing style fueled by adrenaline. Being part of an outdoor game with passionate fans in attendance is an incredible opportunity for Rempe, who describes it as pure hockey at its finest.
Coach Laviolette's Decision
While Rempe is ready to step onto the ice for his NHL debut, coach Peter Laviolette has not confirmed his participation in the game. Laviolette chooses not to project on something that won't occur for another two days and plans to make his decision based on the team's performance in practice. The Rangers will have one more practice session on Saturday morning to solidify the game roster, including Rempe.
Forward Jimmy Vesey, who will be taking Blake Wheeler's spot on the first line, comments on the potential for Rempe's debut in a Stadium Series game between the Rangers and Islanders, calling it the coolest NHL debut he's witnessed thus far. The excitement and anticipation among the players are high as they await Laviolette's decision.
Rempe's Journey and Family Support
Matt Rempe has been recalled to the Rangers roster before, making his rookie lap during warmups for a game against the Calgary Flames on February 10. Although he was a healthy scratch for that game, Rempe has continued to improve and develop his skills in the American Hockey League. At 6-foot-7 and 241 pounds, his physical presence on the ice is noteworthy, but his growth as a player extends beyond his size.
Rempe immediately recognized the significance of the upcoming game when he received the call to return to New York. He excitedly shared the news with his family in Calgary, and his mother, Janice, as well as his sisters Stephanie and Alexandra, will be flying in to support him during the game. Rempe describes the entire experience as unbelievable and a dream come true.
