Simone Rocha impresses with her unique haute couture collection

Simone Rocha showcased her one-off haute couture collection for Jean Paul Gaultier, featuring unusual, thorn-shaped protrusions on cone bras. The collection received high praise from Gaultier himself, who declared it more feminine in a rounded way.

Rocha, who is Irish and based in London, combined Gaultier's main codes of tattoo prints, corsets, and sailors with her own melancholic, homespun femininity. The collection featured skirts and gowns with crinoline panniers and bustles, as well as navy ribbons and illusion tulle.

Corsets were treated as both a security and a second skin on the body, with Rocha's corset dresses being loosely laced and softened with fluffs of tulle. The collection also showcased pink satin sailor hats and long gloves with corset lacing, reflecting Rocha's signature style.

A departure from Gaultier's madcap shows

Unlike the energetic and campy shows that defined Gaultier's career, Rocha's couture collection had a more introspective and pagan vibe. Kirsten Owen, a model known for her moody presence, walked for Rocha wearing a black taffeta mermaid gown adorned with tiny blood red feather poms.

Rocha was amazed by the capabilities of the Gaultier couture atelier, describing it as incredible and artisanal. She expressed her gratitude for being able to work with such a talented team and bring her dreams to life.
