Sony VR Announcement

Sony has launched the PS VR2 for gaming and has now announced a mixed reality headset for work. Developed in collaboration with Siemens, this headset is aimed at spatial content creators, serving various industries including product design and film production.

The headset features two 1.3-type OLED microdisplays with 4K resolution and 96% DCI-P3 coverage. It is powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor. The split rendering feature allows for a stable frame rate when rendering large 3D models, providing realistic rendering of textures and facial expressions in real time.

Spatial tracking is achieved through six cameras and sensors, enabling video see-through functionality. This allows the headset to seamlessly mix virtual objects into the real world. The headset is accompanied by two unique controllers - a ring-shaped controller for manipulation of 3D objects and an accurate pointer for creating and manipulating virtual objects. It is also compatible with Siemens' NX Immersive Designer Software.

Extended Use and Availability

Sony has designed the headset with extended use in mind, ensuring comfort and balance. The front of the headset can be flipped up to allow users to focus on the real world without removing the headset. The XR headset from Sony and Siemens is set to be available later this year, with pricing details to be announced at a later date.
