Steelers Part Ways with Trubisky, Okorafor, and Harvin

In a surprising move, the Pittsburgh Steelers have chosen to release quarterback Mitch Trubisky, offensive lineman Chukwuma Okorafor, and punter Pressley Harvin. This decision comes just a year after the Steelers signed Trubisky to a two-year extension.

By parting ways with these three players, the Steelers are able to free up approximately $13 million in salary cap space for the 2024 season.

This move leaves the team with Kenny Pickett as the only quarterback on the roster for the upcoming season, as Mason Rudolph is set to become a free agent in March. It will be interesting to see how the Steelers address their quarterback situation moving forward.

Trubisky's Time with the Steelers

Mitch Trubisky joined the Steelers as a free agent in 2022, following a quarterback competition during training camp. He started the first four games of the 2022 season before being replaced by Kenny Pickett. Trubisky then served as a backup and mentor to Pickett, earning him a new three-year contract in 2023.

However, Trubisky struggled in his role as a backup in 2023 and was eventually benched for Mason Rudolph. In his time with the Steelers, Trubisky started seven games, completing 64.1% of his pass attempts and throwing eight touchdowns to 10 interceptions.

Although Trubisky had his moments, it seems the Steelers have decided to move on and explore other options for the quarterback position.

Goodbye to Okorafor and Harvin

Along with Trubisky, the Steelers have also released offensive lineman Chukwuma Okorafor and punter Pressley Harvin.

Okorafor had one year remaining on his contract and his release saves the team nearly $9 million in cap space. He started 59 games for the Steelers since being drafted in 2018 but was benched in favor of rookie Broderick Jones during the 2024 season.

Harvin, a seventh-round pick in 2021, struggled with inconsistency throughout his three seasons with the Steelers. Despite beating out Jordan Berry as a rookie, Harvin never quite found his stride as a punter. His release opens up opportunities for the team to explore other options at the position.
