French police have apprehended a man suspected of carrying out a knife and hammer attack in central Paris, resulting in one death and two injuries.

According to France's Interior Minister GĂ©rald Darmanin, the attack occurred near the Eiffel Tower at Bir Hakeim.

The suspect, a French citizen previously known to intelligence services, was apprehended at the scene.

One German tourist was killed in the attack, while two others sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Background of the Suspect

The suspect, born in France in 1997, had a previous four-year prison sentence for planning violent actions in 2016.

He was known to intelligence services for having serious psychiatric disorders.

During the assault, the attacker reportedly shouted 'Allahu Akbar'.

Response and Investigation

French President Emmanuel Macron declared the incident a terror attack and stated that France's anti-terrorism prosecutor's office would investigate.

Macron expressed his condolences and gratitude towards the German national who died and the French emergency services.

The incident prompted the deployment of police, ambulances, and the Paris Fire Brigade to the scene, with the area being cordoned off.
