Switching to Better Internet? Do These 5 Things Before You Change ISPs
Follow this checklist to ensure a smooth transition when switching internet service providers.
Make a checklist of all your devices
Before you switch internet service providers, create a checklist of all the devices in your home that are connected to your network. This includes both Wi-Fi and hardwired devices. By having a comprehensive list, you can ensure that all devices are properly reconnected to the new network.
Include devices such as TVs, desktop computers, laptops, phones, tablets, and smart devices. By ensuring that all devices are accounted for, you can avoid any disruptions in connectivity during the transition.
Consider noting down the wireless devices that are difficult to configure, so you don't miss anything during the switch.
Use a third-party DNS service
To avoid potential DNS issues during the switch to a new ISP, consider using a third-party DNS service for your devices. ISPs often use their own DNS, and switching providers can sometimes cause problems with DNS configuration.
By changing your DNS before you migrate to a new ISP, you can minimize any DNS-related issues that may arise. Popular third-party DNS services include Google (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) and Cloudflare (1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1).
Ensure that you update the DNS settings on all devices that you can access before making the switch.
Keep the same Wi-Fi name (if you can)
If your new ISP uses the same IP address scheme as your current provider, you can retain the same Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password. This is particularly useful if you have numerous devices connected to your Wi-Fi network that would require reconfiguration.
By keeping the same Wi-Fi name and password, you can avoid the hassle of reconfiguring all your devices. Most ISPs allow you to change these options, so you can easily update them to match your previous settings.
If you cannot keep the same Wi-Fi name, be sure to note down all the devices that use wireless connectivity on your checklist.
Place the Wi-Fi router in an ideal location (or add a mesh network)
When switching ISPs, consider relocating your Wi-Fi router to a location that provides better coverage in your home. If your previous ISP's Wi-Fi did not cover the entire house, now is the time to improve the placement.
Alternatively, if your coverage issues persist, consider adding a mesh network to your home. Mesh networks are designed to spread Wi-Fi signals across larger houses, ensuring consistent coverage throughout.
By optimizing your Wi-Fi coverage, you can eliminate any drop zones and ensure that all areas of your house have reliable and fast internet access.
Locate documentation for your devices
In the event that you need to reconfigure your devices to connect to the new network, it is essential to have the documentation readily available. Gather all the necessary documentation for each device, including manuals, setup guides, or any online resources.
By having the documentation on hand, you can easily reconfigure your devices without any issues. This will prevent any delays or frustration during the switch to a new ISP.
Update your router's firmware regularly to ensure optimal performance.
