Holger Rune recently added Roger Federer's former coach Severin Luthi to his team, following his partnership with Novak Djokovic's ex-coach Boris Becker. This has led to speculation among tennis fans that Rune might also bring on Rafael Nadal's uncle and former coach Toni.
Luthi had been a vital part of Federer's team from 2007 until Federer's retirement in 2022. Similarly, Becker had played a significant role in Djokovic's success, helping him win six Grand Slam trophies between 2013 and 2016.
Rune had previously worked with French coach Patrick Mouratoglou, but they parted ways after a disappointing run at the US Open in September 2023. Becker then joined Rune as a full-time coach, and now Luthi has also come on board.
Fans Jokingly Compare Rune's Coach Collection to Thanos Collecting Infinity Stones
Some fans on Reddit humorously compared Rune's strategy of partnering with legendary coaches to Marvel supervillain Thanos' quest to collect Infinity Stones. One fan wrote, "He's collecting big 3 coaches like Infinity stones. Uncle Toni is probably next. Or Goran, if he gets 3 slams with Goran, maybe Goran could get coach of the year."
Another fan used the Marvel reference to joke that Rune would still fail against Djokovic despite having star coaches backing him. They said, "Bro gathering infinity stones to the gauntlet, but Thanovic won't let him snap it."
A third fan speculated that soon one might see Rafael Nadal's long-time coach Toni in Holger Rune's team box, stating, "First Djokovic's old coach, then Federer's old coach...Toni Nadal is next."
Novak Djokovic Leads Head-to-Head Against Holger Rune
Novak Djokovic currently holds a 3-2 lead in his head-to-head record against Holger Rune. Interestingly, neither player has won a match in straight sets against each other so far.
Their first encounter was in the opening round of the 2021 US Open, where Djokovic defeated Rune with a score of 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-1. Djokovic went on to finish as the runner-up, losing to Daniil Medvedev in the final.
However, Rune managed to defeat Djokovic in their next two meetings at the Paris Masters in 2022 and the Italian Open in May 2023. Since then, they have faced each other twice, and Djokovic emerged victorious on both occasions.
