Tesla Introduces New Colors for Model Y in the US

Tesla has introduced two new colors for the Model Y in the US to add extra appeal to its cars. The new colors, Stealth Grey and Ultra Red, are similar to previous colors and are designed to accentuate the curves of the Model Y. Stealth Grey is now the default standard color while Ultra Red is available for an additional cost.

Stealth Grey, which was first seen on the Model S and Model X in October 2023, is a metallic flake color that enhances light refraction. Ultra Red, equivalent to 'Flame Red' in China, is a high-chroma color created with a multi-coat paint. These new color options aim to give customers more choices to personalize their Model Y.

Tesla Updates EPA Range Estimates for US Cars

Tesla has updated the EPA range estimates for its Model S, Model X, and Model Y sold in the US. The updates are a result of changes in the EPA process, which now requires manufacturers to test the vehicle in all acceleration modes and ride heights and take the average range. As a result of the new testing requirements, the range estimates for Tesla models have mostly decreased.

However, it's important to note that these range reductions are not due to any changes in the vehicles themselves but are solely a result of the new testing process. The adjustments to the EPA range estimates aim to provide more realistic and accurate information to owners about the range of their vehicles.

Efficiency Refinements in Tesla Models

The updated EPA range estimates have led to some changes in the range of Tesla models. The Model S Long Range maintains its 405-mile range, but the Model S Plaid's range has been reduced to 359 miles from 396 miles. The Model X Long Range now offers a 335-mile range, down from 348 miles, and the Plaid variant's range is reduced to 326 miles from 333 miles.

The most significant changes are seen in the Model Y, with the Long Range variant now having a range of 310 miles (down from 330 miles) and the Performance model having a range of 285 miles (down from 303 miles). The rear-wheel drive variant's range remains steady at 260 miles.

These range adjustments are specific to the EPA testing cycle in the US and will not affect the range estimates in other countries. By providing more accurate range estimates, Tesla aims to give customers a better understanding of the real-world range of their new vehicles.

Conclusion: New Colors and More Realistic Range Estimates

The introduction of new colors, especially the striking Ultra Red, is expected to further enhance the appeal of the Model Y, which is already the best-selling EV in the world. Customers now have more options to customize their Model Y's appearance.

While some customers were hoping for additional colors available in Germany to be offered in the US, Tesla's decision to introduce these new colors shows its commitment to continually improving and updating its vehicles. As of now, there are rumors of a refreshed Model Y in the works, but Tesla has always been secretive about upcoming changes. Regardless, Tesla owners can expect more realistic and reliable range estimates with the updated EPA range numbers.
