Recall Notice for Backup Camera Issue

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall notice regarding a backup camera issue in certain Tesla Model S, X, and Y vehicles.

According to the NHTSA, the affected vehicles with Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) computer Hardware 4.0 (HW4) may not correctly display a rearview image while reversing.

The recall applies to approximately 199,575 vehicles from the 2023 model year, running software versions 2023.44.30 to 2023.44.30.6.

Software Update Released by Tesla

Tesla quickly responded to the recall notice by releasing a software update to address the backup camera issue.

The update has been introduced as version 2023.44.100.1 and is designed to fix the problem identified by the NHTSA.

Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by mail on March 22 regarding the software update.

Tesla's Stance on Recalls and Software Updates

The term "recall" has sparked debate in the context of software updates for Tesla and other electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers.

While some criticize the use of the term for issues that can be resolved through over-the-air (OTA) updates, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has voiced his disagreement with labeling software updates as recalls.

Musk argues that the term is outdated and inaccurate since these updates do not require physical servicing and have not caused any injuries.

NHTSA's Definition and Future Developments

Despite the controversy, the NHTSA currently considers such issues as recalls, even if they can be fixed through software updates.

There is ongoing discussion about developing new terminology for these types of recalls that can be resolved via software updates.

As of now, the NHTSA and the Department of Transportation have not provided any comment on this matter.
