The Opener: Giants, Martinez, Acuna
With one major piece of news already breaking this morning, here are three other things for MLBTR readers to keep an eye on around the baseball world today:
Are the Giants done?
The Giants recently made a significant move in the free agent market by signing third baseman Matt Chapman to a three-year deal. This signing improves their defense at third base and adds a strong bat to their lineup. However, with Chapman on board, many are wondering if the Giants have more moves planned before Opening Day. Reports suggest that the club remains interested in top free agent pitcher Blake Snell. Additionally, incumbent third baseman J.D. Davis may be a trade candidate after the Chapman signing.
President of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi has expressed that major additions are unlikely after the acquisition of Chapman. It remains to be seen if the Giants will make any more moves before the start of the season.
Where will Martinez land?
Veteran slugger J.D. Martinez is now one of the top remaining free agent hitters after an impressive performance last season. As a primarily designated hitter, Martinez's options on the market may be more limited than others. However, there have been discussions about potential suitors for Martinez's services. With Opening Day approaching and other top bats already signed, it will be interesting to see if Martinez finds a team soon.
Martinez was previously linked to negotiations with the Giants, but those talks fell through when they signed Jorge Soler. Now, Martinez's future team remains uncertain.
Acuna meeting with doctor
NL MVP Ronald Acuna Jr. has been dealing with an injury concern in his right meniscus, which led to his recent absence from the Braves' spring lineup. While the Braves are confident that Acuna will be ready for Opening Day, they are taking precautions due to his previous ACL injury. Today, Acuna is scheduled to meet with Dr. Neal ElAttrache for further examination. This appointment could provide more information about Acuna's status for the upcoming season.
If Acuna does require time on the injured list, the Braves have options to fill his spot in the outfield. Players like Forrest Wall, J.P. Martinez, or non-roster invitee Jordan Luplow could step in and contribute alongside Michael Harris II and Jarred Kelenic.
