This Google Play App Lets Android Users Experience the Joy of Blue Bubbles When Texting With iPhones
Beeper Mini, an app available on Google Play, allows Android users to send blue bubbles to iPhone users.
Beeper Mini: Bringing iMessage to Android
Android users who have felt left out of the "blue bubble club" can now join in thanks to Beeper Mini. This app, available on Google Play, brings iMessage support to Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S23. Unlike other attempts, such as Nothing Chats, Beeper Mini works with any Android smartphone.
Beeper Mini connects directly to Apple servers to send and receive end-to-end encrypted messages. Previously, Beeper used a Mac relay server in the cloud to send iMessages, but now it replicates the iMessage experience on an Android device.
With Beeper Mini, Android users can enjoy iMessage-centric features like reacting to messages, viewing full-size, high-resolution photos and videos, and even having their Android phone number display the coveted blue bubble.
No Apple ID Required with Beeper Mini
One advantage of Beeper Mini over other similar apps like Nothing Chats is that it does not require an Apple ID account to use the service. While signing in with an Apple ID is optional, Nothing Chats stores the user's iCloud login credentials as a token for the app to function.
However, Beeper Mini does come with a cost. After a 7-day free trial, users will need to pay a monthly subscription of $1.99 to continue using the app. Beeper explains that this business model allows them to provide a great app with no ads and complete data security and privacy. It also incentivizes them to continue improving the app with new features and improvements.
Apple's Plan for RCS Support
Beeper Mini's release comes at an interesting time, as Apple recently announced that it will support Rich Communication Services (RCS) on its iPhones starting next year. While it's unclear exactly how Apple will implement RCS support, they have made it clear that they will not be opening up iMessage to other platforms. RCS messages on iPhones will still appear as green bubbles.
It remains to be seen how Beeper Mini will compete with future RCS support from Apple, but for now, it provides a solution for Android users who want to experience the joy of blue bubbles when texting with their iPhone-owning friends.
