Nick Kyrgios' Exhaustion with Tennis

Nick Kyrgios has expressed his weariness with the sport of tennis, admitting that he no longer wants to play the game. This revelation comes as doubts have grown about his ability to make a successful comeback from serious knee and wrist injuries.

Despite his fatigue, Kyrgios maintains that he will attempt a return to the sport and retire on his own terms. However, he acknowledges that, ideally, he would already be finished with his career.

Speaking on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, Kyrgios opened up about his feelings, saying, 'If it was up to me, I don’t really want to play any more to be honest. I’m exhausted, I’m tired. I have had three surgeries now that ... I’m only 28 years old, I always wanted to have a family and not be in pain. When I get up, I can’t walk without pain. It’s a tough gig.'

Dreams of Family and Freedom

Kyrgios also revealed that if he could go back in time, he would never have picked up a tennis racket in the first place. He expressed a desire to have a family and live a life without constant pain.

Having made the difficult decision to withdraw from the Australian Open, Kyrgios plans to transition into a role as a commentator. However, he still intends to make a comeback to the court in 2024, albeit reluctantly.

Kyrgios shared his future plans, stating, 'I only want to play for about another one to two years and be at the top and go down my own terms. I would hate to have another surgery or anything like that. So I think I’ve still got the ability to have a good one to two years and then that’s it. I think I’ll be at peace with everything I’ve achieved.'

The Challenges Ahead

While Kyrgios remains determined to make a return to tennis, his injuries pose a significant obstacle. He underwent knee surgery in January and later had another surgery on his serving wrist in October.

John Newcombe, an Australian tennis great, acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead for Kyrgios. He expressed his thoughts, saying, 'I don’t know much about the injury but it seems to be hanging around there and it’s going to be hard to come back from that because he’s getting older every year and he’s been out for quite a while now.'

'If he does get the wrist right, he’s got a big game and he can win a lot of easy points,' Newcombe added.
