Titans Near Deal with Brian Callahan as Coach
The Tennessee Titans are close to finalizing a deal with Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan as their next head coach, according to sources.
About Brian Callahan
In five seasons as the Bengals' offensive coordinator, Callahan helped establish a successful offense that led Cincinnati to two AFC North division championships and a Super Bowl appearance.
Under Callahan's guidance, the Bengals' offense ranked seventh in the NFL in points per game, eighth in total yards per game, and fifth in passing yards. They also finished fourth in offensive DVOA in 2022.
Bengals coach Zac Taylor praised Callahan for his contributions to the team, stating that he establishes the whole structure of the offense and has helped develop every position.
Titans' Decision to Hire Callahan
Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk fired Mike Vrabel after back-to-back losing seasons. Vrabel had led the team to four consecutive winning seasons.
After starting the 2022 season with a record of 7-3, the Titans went on to lose 13 of their next 18 games, including a seven-game losing streak to end the season.
The committee, led by general manager Ran Carthon, ultimately decided to hire Callahan as the new head coach.
Callahan's Experience and Impact
Callahan began his NFL coaching career as an offensive assistant for the Denver Broncos and has since worked with several top quarterbacks throughout his career.
He served as the Lions' quarterbacks coach and helped Matthew Stafford achieve 4,000-plus passing yards in each of the two seasons they worked together.
Callahan also played a key role in Derek Carr's success with the Oakland Raiders, helping him reach 4,000 passing yards for the first time in his career.
