Travel Photographer of the Year: Lyrical landscapes win awards

The winners of the Travel Photographer of the Year 2023 competition have been announced, showcasing stunning images of landscapes and cultures from around the world.

AndreJa Ravnak crowned Travel Photographer of the Year

Slovenian photographer AndreJa Ravnak has been named the Travel Photographer of the Year 2023. Ravnak's work captures the beauty of hop growing in Slovenia, as well as rolling fields in Italy and the Czech Republic. The judges praised Ravnak's ability to find subtle elegance in his subjects, making them engaging and beautiful despite them not being obvious or photographed at an optimal time of year.

The winning images from the competition showcase lyrical landscapes and agricultural scenes, adding a touch of beauty to everyday scenes.

Category winners highlight diverse perspectives

In addition to the overall winner, several category winners were recognized for their outstanding work. Caden Shepard Choi, a 14-year-old from the United States, was named Young Travel Photographer of the Year. Her black and white images documented the wool production and weaving traditions of the Navajo people in Chinle, Arizona.

Other category winners include Lilly Zhang, who captured delicate landscapes in Pennsylvania, USA, and Zayan Durrani, whose images showcased the erupting Litli-Hrutur volcano in Iceland. Each winner brought a unique perspective to their subjects, highlighting the beauty of different cultures and landscapes.

Captivating portfolios take home top honors

The winners of the Landscape & Environment, Nature, Wildlife & Conservation, People & Cultures, and Visual Stories portfolios impressed the judges with their captivating collections of images.

Armand Sarlangue from France took home the Landscape & Environment portfolio award for his stunning aerial drone shots of the glacial landscapes in the Icelandic highlands. Martin Broen from the USA won the Nature, Wildlife & Conservation portfolio award for his black and white images documenting the Mobula ray migration in Baja California, Mexico.

Athanasios Maloukos, a Greek photographer, was recognized for his powerful portfolio capturing shamans performing rituals on Siberia's frozen Lake Baikal. Alain Schroeder from Belgium won the Visual Stories portfolio award for his series on athletes in their 80s and 90s participating in athletics championships.

These portfolios showcased not only the technical skills of the photographers but also their ability to tell compelling visual stories.

Recognizing outstanding single images

The competition also awarded single images in various categories. Jack Lawson from the UK received the Best Single Image award in the People and Cultures category for his photograph of the Nigerian National Amputee Football Team training on a beach in Lagos.

Kazuaki Koseki from Japan won the Best Single Image award in the Landscape and Environment category with his mesmerizing shot of Lake Shirakawa in Tōhoku, Japan. F Dilek Yurdakul from Turkey was recognized for her portrait of a young Kalash schoolgirl in Chitral, Pakistan, earning her the Best Single Image in a Portfolio award.

These single images showcased the photographers' ability to capture impactful moments and convey powerful stories in a single frame.
