Varjo Reveals XR-4 Headset with 'Indistinguishable' Mixed Reality Visuals
Varjo has announced its latest high-end enterprise headset, the XR-4. The company claims that the mixed reality visuals seen through the headset are 'indistinguishable' from real-life. This is a bold claim, but Varjo has a reputation for delivering on their promises. Only time will tell if the XR-4 lives up to expectations.
The XR-4 comes in two editions - the 'Focal Edition' priced at $10,000 and the standard edition priced at $4,000. The Focal Edition boasts a passthrough view with an impressive 51 pixels per-degree resolution, thanks to an eye-tracked auto-focus system. On the other hand, the standard edition offers a still impressive 33 pixels per-degree resolution but does not include the auto-focus system.
High Resolution Visuals and Inside-Out Tracking
Achieving the high resolution mixed reality view of the XR-4 required the inclusion of pixel-packed displays. The headset also features inside-out tracking as the default, along with built-in audio and Varjo's own controllers. These features combine to provide a seamless and immersive experience for users.
The XR-4's specifications include a display with 2x mini-LEDs, 96% DCI-P3 colors, and a resolution of 3,840x3,744. The headset has a refresh rate of 90Hz and a field-of-view of 120° x 105°. It also includes an IPD adjustment range of 56-72mm and eye-tracking at a rate of 200Hz.
Editions, Pricing, and Release Date
The XR-4 is available in two editions - the Focal Edition and the standard edition. The Focal Edition, priced at $10,000, includes the eye-tracked auto-focus passthrough cameras, resulting in a passthrough resolution of 51 pixels per-degree. On the other hand, the standard edition, priced at $4,000, offers a slightly lower passthrough resolution of 33 pixels per-degree.
In terms of pricing, the standard edition of the XR-4 is actually cheaper than its predecessor, the XR-3. The XR-4 standard edition is priced at $4,000 and does not require an annual support charge. Varjo is also offering two 'Secure Edition' variants of the XR-4, which are TAA compliant and can be ordered without any wireless radios at higher price points of $8,000 and $14,000.
The XR-4 is set to begin shipping by the end of 2023, and it promises to deliver a high-quality mixed reality experience for enterprise users.
