Zalatoris Makes the Switch

Will Zalatoris returns to the PGA TOUR after a seven-month break and will be using a new putter in the upcoming Hero World Challenge.

Zalatoris has swapped his previous Scotty Cameron putter for an L.A.B. Mezz.1 Max, a broomstick-style putter similar to the one used by Lucas Glover.

The switch was partly motivated by a desire to alleviate pressure on Zalatoris' back, as his posture is more upright with the broomstick putter. However, the main objective was to improve his putting performance.

Struggles on the Greens

Although Zalatoris has showcased exceptional ball-striking and driving skills on the TOUR, his putting has consistently held him back.

In his first three seasons, Zalatoris ranked outside the top 100 in Strokes Gained: Putting. In contrast, he has ranked inside the top 10 in Strokes Gained: Approach in both of his full seasons on TOUR.

The switch to the broomstick-style putter aims to address his putting struggles and provide him with a more comfortable and effective technique on the greens.

Adjusting to the New Putter

Zalatoris shared that it took him a few months to get used to the broomstick-style putter and understand how to use it effectively.

Having experimented with similar putters in college, Zalatoris recognized the benefits of reduced shoulder rotation and a simpler forward-back motion that helps him putt more consistently on the intended line.

He has already noticed an improvement in his putting, with even his mis-hits or slight pulls and pushes yielding better results than before.
