Wonka Tops New Year's Box Office as 2023 Comes to a Close
Warner Bros.' movie 'Wonka' is leading the box office race for the long New Year's weekend, earning $31.8 million domestically and $39.1 million overseas. Meanwhile, 'The Color Purple' and other films also performed well during the holiday season.
Wonka Dominates the Box Office
'Wonka', the Warner Bros. film featuring Timothée Chalamet as Willy Wonka, is set to gross $31.8 million domestically during the four-day holiday weekend. In addition, it has earned a significant $244.4 million internationally and has a global total of $386.9 million.
Success for 'The Color Purple' and Other Films
Another musical from Warner Bros., 'The Color Purple', produced by Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg, has been performing beyond expectations. Over the New Year's weekend, it earned an estimated $17.7 million, bringing its domestic total to an impressive $50 million so far.
Overall, the post-pandemic box office has seen a 20% increase in revenue compared to 2022. Despite this growth, it is still down by 20-21% compared to 2019, the last year before the COVID-19 crisis.
Aquaman Sequel Struggles at the Box Office
While 'Wonka' and 'The Color Purple' are excelling, Warner Bros.' 'Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom' is facing challenges. The superhero sequel is expected to earn $26.3 million domestically during the New Year's weekend, bringing its total to a lackluster $84.7 million. In comparison, the first 'Aquaman' film earned $215.4 million during the same time frame in 2018.
However, the film is performing better internationally, with a foreign tally of $173.6 million and a global total of $258.3 million.
