A model of the Eiffel Tower has been officially deemed the world's tallest matchstick building a day after being ruled out by Guinness World Records (GWR).

A Rollercoaster Journey

The 7.19m (23ft) tower had initially been disqualified for being made out of the wrong type of matches. However, GWR reconsidered their decision and congratulated model-enthusiast Richard Plaud for his achievement. Mr. Plaud described this week as an 'emotional rollercoaster.'

It took Mr. Plaud eight years to build the model, using 706,900 matches and 23kg of glue. Initially, he started by cutting the red, sulphur tops off commercial matches but soon realized it was a tedious process. After contacting the manufacturer, he received plain wooden matches to continue his work.

On 27 December, Mr. Plaud completed the tower and submitted it to GWR for authentication. Initially, it was rejected, as only 'commercially available' matches were deemed eligible for a record-breaking attempt. However, GWR later changed their decision and approved Mr. Plaud's tower.

Recognition from Guinness World Records

Mark McKinley from Guinness World Records expressed excitement about approving the tower. He admitted that they had been too strict in the selection of matches and acknowledged Richard Plaud's achievement as 'officially amazing.'

Mr. Plaud hopes to showcase his tower in Paris during the Olympics in July. The previous world record holder for the tallest matchstick Eiffel Tower was Toufic Daher from Lebanon, who built a 6.53m (21ft) tower in 2009.
