Yankees Acquire González and Vivas

The Yankees acquired left-handed reliever Victor González and infielder Jorbit Vivas from the Dodgers on Monday. This trade was a ripple effect of Shohei Ohtani's massive 10-year, $700 million agreement with Los Angeles last week.

In exchange for González and Vivas, the Yankees parted ways with shortstop Trey Sweeney. This move cleared two spots on the Dodgers' 40-man roster, allowing them to finalize their reported deals with Ohtani and reliever Joe Kelly.

Focus on Pitching

The Yankees' front office is now shifting its attention to other West Coast targets. Managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner and the team are set to engage with right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the Los Angeles area.

General manager Brian Cashman emphasized the importance of pitching. After focusing on outfielders Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo, Cashman states that onboarding pitching is a priority for the team.

González and Vivas Add Depth

Victor González, a 28-year-old left-handed reliever, could help fill a void in the Yankees' bullpen. He posted a 4.01 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP in 33 2/3 innings this past season. His strong performance included holding opponents scoreless in 27 out of 34 appearances.

Jorbit Vivas, a 22-year-old infielder, is now ranked as the Yankees' No. 10 prospect. He has shown versatility by playing second base and third base during his professional career. In 2023, Vivas batted .269 with 13 homers, 25 steals, and a .788 OPS in Double-A and Triple-A.
