Red Sox's Interest in Next Tier Free Agents

The Red Sox have been connected to Jordan Montgomery, Blake Snell, and other high-profile free agents, but they seem to be more engaged with the next tier of players.

Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reported that the Red Sox are showing interest in pitchers Shota Imanaga and Lucas Giolito, as well as outfielder Teoscar Hernández. These players have been previous targets for the team.

Among the group, Imanaga is expected to have the highest price tag. As the #2 pitcher coming from Japan, he had an impressive 2.80 ERA and led the NPB in strikeouts. Imanaga is available via the posting system and will meet with interested teams in the U.S. after the New Year.

Possibility of James Paxton Reunion

While the pursuit of Imanaga might involve a multi-year commitment, there is also interest in reuniting with James Paxton on a shorter deal.

According to WEEI's Rob Bradford, the Red Sox have expressed interest in bringing Paxton back. Chris Cotillo of MassLive mentioned that the team has maintained contact with Paxton throughout the offseason.

Paxton pitched to a 4.50 ERA last season with notable strikeout numbers. However, he has struggled with injuries, making only six appearances in the past two years. While there is no indication of an imminent deal, the Red Sox remain in contact with Paxton.
