Mariners Acquire Santos

The Mariners have acquired right-hander Gregory Santos from the White Sox in exchange for right-hander Prelander Berroa, outfielder Zach DeLoach, and their 2024 Competitive Balance Round B draft pick (#69 overall), according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. Both clubs have since announced the deals. To make room for the club’s additions on the 40-man roster, the White Sox announced that they’ve designated right-hander Lane Ramsey for assignment.

Santos's Impressive Performance

Santos, 24, had a strong season as a rookie in 2023, posting a 3.39 ERA in 60 appearances for the White Sox. He had an impressive strikeout rate and walk rate, along with a high ground ball percentage. His 2.65 FIP ranked among the best relief arms in the league last year.

Santos's Role with the Mariners

With the presence of other strong relievers like Felix Bautista and Andres Munoz, Santos is not expected to be the primary closer for the Mariners. However, he is likely to fill the gap left by Justin Topa's departure from the late-inning mix. The Mariners expect Santos to make several appearances this spring in preparation for the upcoming season.

White Sox's Return

In exchange for Santos, the White Sox are receiving Prelander Berroa, Zach DeLoach, and a draft pick. Berroa is a promising young pitcher who showed potential in the minors. DeLoach has shown improvement in his power hitting and could contribute at the big league level. The White Sox will also have a valuable draft pick in the upcoming draft.
