Manaea signs two-year deal with Mets

Sean Manaea, a 31-year-old left-handed pitcher, has become the latest addition to the New York Mets' revamped rotation. According to multiple reports, Manaea has agreed to a two-year contract worth $28 million. He will receive $14.5 million in 2024 and $13.5 million in 2025. The agreement grants him the option to opt out after the 2024 season.

The New York Post was the first to report the news of Manaea's signing. The left-hander became a free agent when he declined the final season of his previous contract with the San Francisco Giants. He gave up a $12.5 million salary for the 2024 season.

Manaea's performance and statistics

Manaea spent the 2023 season with the San Francisco Giants, where he posted a 4.44 ERA in 10 starts and 27 relief appearances. After a rough start to the season, he was dropped from the rotation in mid-May but eventually returned for four more starts in mid-September.

Throughout his career, Manaea has relied heavily on his fastball, using it for 57% of his pitches in the 2023 season. He also throws changeups (17%), sliders (15%), and sweepers (10%). With a career ERA of 4.10, Manaea has played for the Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, and Giants.

Mets' offseason moves

The signing of Sean Manaea is part of the New York Mets' busy offseason. In addition to Manaea, the Mets have also added right-hander Luis Severino, center fielder Harrison Bader, and infielder Joey Wendle to their roster. They acquired outfielder Tyrone Taylor in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers as well.

The Mets have gone through significant changes in their pitching rotation, with the departures of Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, and Carlos Carrasco. David Peterson is also currently recovering from hip surgery. As a result, Manaea will join holdovers Kodai Senga, Jose Quintana, Adrian Houser, and Tylor Megill as starting candidates for the Mets.
