Royals Sign Catcher Austin Nola to Major League Deal
The Kansas City Royals have reached an agreement with catcher Austin Nola on a major league contract. The financial details of the deal have not been disclosed. Nola, who was previously in camp with the Milwaukee Brewers on a non-roster pact, has been granted a release by the Brewers to pursue other opportunities. The Royals may clear a roster spot by placing Kris Bubic on the 60-day injured list.
Nola's Path to MLB Playing Time Blocked
Despite being in the Brewers' camp, Nola was unlikely to secure a spot as the starting catcher due to the presence of William Contreras. Furthermore, the backup role was already assigned to Eric Haase before the recent signing of Gary Sánchez. Nola's chances of earning a major league job were slim unless there were injuries ahead of him.
This isn't the first time Sánchez has hindered Nola's playing time in the big leagues. Nola struggled in the 2023 season, hitting .146/.260/.192 in 52 games for the Padres before being optioned to Triple-A.
Nola's tenure with the Padres was disappointing overall, as he produced a .234/.314/.320 slash line over 819 plate appearances. His defensive performance also declined in recent years, with below-average ratings in framing and blocking.
Chance for Redemption in Kansas City
Despite his struggles, Nola has secured a spot on the Royals' 40-man roster. The team already has Salvador Pérez and Freddy Fermín as catchers, with Fermín performing well enough last year to hold the backup job. Nola still has a minor league option remaining, allowing the Royals to potentially keep him at Triple-A Omaha.
Nola has four years and 45 days of MLB service time. Once he reaches the five-year mark, he will have the right to refuse any additional minor league assignments. However, the Royals could keep him on the roster through arbitration for the 2025 season if he regains his form.
Future Managerial Aspirations for Pujols
In other news, former player Albert Pujols has expressed interest in a future managerial role. Pujols, who recently retired from professional baseball, could potentially transition into a coaching or managerial position in the future.
The Miami Marlins have also made a move, signing Vladimir Gutierrez to a minor league contract.
