Jeff Peterson, a 35-year-old executive from the Brooklyn Nets, is set to become the new head of basketball operations for the Charlotte Hornets, sources have revealed. This move comes as the Hornets aim to revitalize their historically underperforming franchise. New owners Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin have chosen Peterson to replace Mitch Kupchak, who will transition into an advisory role for the Hornets.
Charlotte's ownership has expressed confidence in Peterson's ability to provide long-term leadership for the organization. They believe he possesses the player personnel expertise, relationships, and negotiation skills necessary to transform the Hornets into a formidable franchise.
Previous Experience and Connections
Peterson, who was among a dozen candidates interviewed by the Hornets' ownership, has a history with Rick Schnall. Schnall was a minority owner of the Atlanta Hawks, where Peterson began his career as an intern and eventually rose to become an assistant GM. Additionally, Peterson has worked closely with Hornets coach Steve Clifford during their time together with the Nets.
During his tenure with the Brooklyn Nets, Peterson played a crucial role in attracting star players such as Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in free agency, as well as facilitating the trade for James Harden. His experience alongside Nets GM Sean Marks has prepared him for the challenges of a GM-level role.
