Nets Fire Jacque Vaughn
The Brooklyn Nets have made the decision to fire coach Jacque Vaughn after a disappointing start to the season. The team, currently with a 21-33 record, announced the termination on Monday. Vaughn has been the coach for 129 games during his current stint with the team and has led them to a 64-65 record.
The Nets' recent performance has been lackluster, with a 50-point loss to the Boston Celtics before the All-Star break. As a result, they are currently in 11th place in the Eastern Conference. Their scoring and defensive rankings are also less than impressive, with a 21st ranking in points scored and a 16th ranking in points allowed per game.
Vaughn's Coaching Career with the Nets
Jacque Vaughn was initially an assistant coach for the Nets before being promoted to interim head coach on November 1, 2022. He took over from Steve Nash and was later named the permanent coach. Vaughn signed a multiyear contract extension on February 21, 2023.
During his tenure from November to February, Vaughn achieved the fifth-best record in the league and had an impressive 12-1 record in December 2022. However, the team underwent significant changes at the end of the season, trading away All-Stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving and transitioning into a rebuilding phase with new acquisition Mikal Bridges.
Vaughn's Coaching History
This is not the first time Jacque Vaughn has been fired in February. He was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Orlando Magic on February 5, 2015. Vaughn had coached the Magic for two years prior, but only managed to achieve a 58-158 record.
Vaughn began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs in 2010 under Gregg Popovich. He had previously played for the Spurs and had a 12-year playing career that included stints with the Utah Jazz, Atlanta Hawks, Magic, and Nets.
